The Mooinjer Veggey Nursery is held during school term time at:-

St. John’s Primary School. St John’s Nursery is based in a classroom within St John’s Primary School with access to outdoor areas and weekly use of school sports hall.

Mooinjer Veggey employ a Nursery Manager and Nursery Assistant both qualified in level 3 in Early Years. At St. John’s we are registered for children from aged two years until the time they start school. The adult: child ratio is a minimum 2:16 at all times. Staff follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum in a relaxed and friendly way.

St John’s sessions are from 8.45 – 12.45 every day and until 3.45p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday. We ask that parents do not bring their children in before their start time and do pick them up promptly at the end of the session.

St John’s Nursery Managers are Bnr. Kay Allen QCF Level 3 and Bnr. Steph Leech Level 3. Rachel Spencer is the Senior Assistant QCF Level 3.  Georgia Wedgwood Mayne is our Nursery Assistant and SENCO. There are two staff present at all times, and three staff for part of each full day.

They use Manx with the children through songs, rhymes and in daily routines.

‘Mooinjer Veggey’ (pronounced Munja Vegga) means ‘Little People’.

No, very few of our parents do. Many children enjoy teaching their parents and if you were interested we can certainly point you in the right direction! Staff at Mooinjer Veggey are always keen to help parents even if it’s just to tell you how to say “moghrey mie” (good morning).

Even if you have never used any Manx before, we encourage you to support your child by using a few Manx phrases that are used daily in the nursery.

Most children respond enthusiastically and enjoy the rhymes and songs that are taught. Some go on to speak simple phrases and are curious to expand their Manx vocabulary. All children are gently encouraged to do what they can. They are never told off for using English.

All of our staff are learners and committed to using simple Manx words, phrases and songs within the groups. Each group follows the Mooinjer Veggey Curriculum and the children all learn simple songs, rhymes and basic phrases. Other fluent speakers from the Mooinjer Veggey charity are on hand for all things gaelg.

At all our groups children learn Manx through daily routines and songs and rhymes.

This happens as part of the normal daily activities in a very relaxed manner. The same phrases are repeated constantly so children quickly learn what to do and how to express their needs.

The Bunscoill is natural fit for continuing to learn the language after preschool, however your child can choose to learn Manx in most primary schools across the island in Key Stage 2 (juniors) and any child can study Manx to GCSE and A level equivalent at secondary school.

Parents/carers must complete the Payment Agreement Form and return it the nursery before your child can start at the nursery. Nursery fees are payable one term in advance of your child attending. We send you a bill for the whole term. This bill is based on which sessions you have told us you wish your child to attend.

Online payment directly into Mooinjer Veggey bank account is preferred. A payment agreement can be made to pay by instalments. Regrettably, we cannot refund if your child is absent for any reason, as we still have to pay the same overheads.

Unfortunately we cannot refund fees paid if a child is absent due to illness or any other reason. This is because we still have to pay out the same staff wages and other overheads whether or not your child attends session.

Please note that in the event of a temporary forced closure (e.g. a snow day) fees will still apply.

Nurseries are messy places – your child is likely to get muddy, sticky, or covered in paint at some point. We play outside a lot. Please dress them with this in mind and provide a change of clothes.

All belonging must be labelled to ensure items do not go missing or go home with the wrong child.

We believe healthy eating is important. Typical snacks include apple, banana, cucumber, carrot, raisins, crackers with or without butter and plain biscuits. We encourage the children to drink their ‘ushtey’ (water) and even sing a song about it in Manx to help make the occasion fun.

Nursery staff regularly offer prompts for children to use the toilet throughout the day. Independence is encouraged however staff will support the child with toilet training and washing hands should they need it.

The nursery has a limited supply of clothing for children to change into should they soil their clothes. We recommend that you pack a spare set of clothes for your child.

If this is what your child needs then of course they can. However we recommend your child starts without bringing their precious toy or blanket to nursery as we often find that it can be a counter productive reminder of home that creates an unbreakable bond that prolongs settling in nursery and they could get upset if it gets damaged or lost.

We try to take reasonable care of your child’s belongings, however we cannot be responsible for toys that are brought into the group without our knowledge. To avoid any toys going missing, please ensure that all belongings must be named.

We would like parents / carers to read the following section carefully.

Our staff have attended Safeguarding courses at which we have been informed by the DHSC about our legal requirements should we have any suspicions of child abuse. In line with other nurseries, we have been issued with a copy of the procedures that we must follow in such a case. In the case of suspected physical or sexual abuse, Mooinjer Veggey staff would be obliged to bring this to the attention of the Social Services, but we would notify parents of this. We are aware that there is often a reasonable explanation for injury, but you will understand the need to err on the side of caution. This is not designed to hound parents, but to protect children at risk.

We ask all parents to be aware of the following;

Illness and medication

We need to have up to date contact numbers at all times. Please keep sick children at home. Prescribed medicines only can begiven in line with our medication policy.

Accident and Emergencies

The nursery holds regular fire drills. Our staff have up to date first aid certificates. Staff record any accidents in an Accident book and will phone to inform you of any serious accidents immediately

Arrival and Departure of Children

We must be informed if there is any change in the normal arrangements for collecting children.

Child Protection

We follow the procedures laid down by the Isle of Man Child Safeguarding Children Board. Therefore in cases of suspected child abuse we would be required to notify Social Services. We also contact parents to let them know that we have done this.

Confidentiality

We seek permission prior to giving out names or contact details for other children. We will not discuss individual children with anyone other than their parent/carers.

Behaviour

We have a behaviour policy  which  is in line with best practice. It is based on positive encouragement rather than chastisement. We work with parents to help individual children behave appropriately, but ultimately we do have to consider the needs of other children in the group.

If you are worried about anything at all, do tell us and we will try to help. A copy of our complaints procedure is on display at the nursery.

We work hard to gain the confidence of parents / carers and we take the care of their children seriously. However, on rare occasions there may be differences of opinion about how particular incidents have been handled.

Our staff are advised to abide by Mooinjer Veggey policy at all times, but if you feel unhappy about the way something is dealt with, the first thing to do is to bring it up with the Manager who will attempt to explain matters or investigate matters further. Most issues can be resolved quickly and easily at this stage.

If you still feel dissatisfied please ask for our written Complaints Procedure.

Please keep sick children away from nursery, as we have no facilities to look after them. We are sorry we cannot administer any medication. If your child has any allergies please do inform the Manager and make sure you fill in the relevant medical information on the registration form. We must have parents’ permission to administer inhalers/ epi-pens. Please remember to keep us updated with the names and numbers of people we can contact should your child become sick during nursery.
